Course Description

Bluegrass has got to be the easiest music to play, but the hardest to play well!  In addition to a vast repertoire of tunes and songs, the bluegrass fiddle player needs to be a great improviser.  Bill Monroe’s fiddle player Kenny Baker aptly called bluegrass “hillbilly jazz.” Improvisation requires a whole different set of skills than folk style fiddling does.  Spend eight weeks focusing on advancing your bluegrass skills.

Master teacher Brian Wicklund uses classic bluegrass repertoire to clearly explain core concepts and techniques used by the bluegrass fiddler.  He’ll explain how chords work in a song and how to play backup to vocalists and how to trade solos in a jam.

Brian will teach you how to develop your own killer solo to a song using his easy to follow, step-by-step approach.  You’ll learn essential bluegrass techniques such as classic kickoffs, hammer-ons, slides, double stops, classic endings and improvising around the melody.

INCLUDED IN THE LIVE LESSONS

  • Sheet music
  • Lyrics
  • Audio examples

In addition to 8 weekly lessons, you can also register for a short, one-on-one lesson with Brian during one of the 4 Saturday review/masterclass sessions for no additional cost.  You can schedule a time after the first class.

WHAT’S REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE?

Well, you’ll need your fiddle!

You’ll also need a computer, laptop or smart phone with a camera connected to high speed internet (not dialup).  The courses will be held on a live-meeting platform called Zoom.  Prior to the class, you will be sent a link to the meeting where you will need to download a small application that allows you to link to the class.  The instructor controls when the meeting begins, ends, and classroom discussion.

QUESTIONS?

You probably will find an answer on our FAQ Page.  If you don’t see you question there, you can email Brian.

HOW DO THE LIVE COURSES WORK?

There are eight Weekday Classes in which the instructor introduces a new tune or topic and reinforces the skill with call and response. Students can ask questions by voice or by typing in a chat box. The instructor also makes available a short recap video of each lesson for the student to review or in case a student can’t attend a lesson.

There are also four Review and Master Classes offered on Saturdays.  Half of the hour is a review of the material covered in the Weekday Class.  The other half of the hour is a master class format which is a series of short one-on-one lessons with individual students that can be viewed by the whole group to learn from. Registered students can sign up for Master Class sessions on a first come, first served basis. They are fun, low stress and really beneficial. Of course, shy students are not required to have a session and can just observe!

Students find the regularity and discipline of a scheduled weekly class really helps to motivate learning and practice. It’s like going to a Fiddle Pal Camp, but in your own home!
